Thomas Gilbert Jr., 34, was found guilty of shooting his father in the head in a Midtown apartment after his allowance was reduced.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — An adult son who shot his father in the head after the patriarch tried to cut his allowance has been convicted of murder, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance announced.

Thomas Gilbert Jr., 34, was found guilty Friday of killing his father, hedge fund manager Thomas Gilbert Sr., in his Beekman Place home then trying to cover his tracks by staging a suicide on January 4, 2015, prosecutors said.

Gilbert was spurred to murder when his parents, in an attempt to make their adult son more self-sufficient, cut a monthly allowance he lavished on travel, elite fitness clubs and other luxury expenses, said prosecutors.

Investigators found 40-caliber ammo, a loaded Glock magazine, an owner’s manual and carrying case for a Glock pistol and other weapon enhancements at Gilbert Jr's. Apartment. After the search, police arrested Gilbert Jr. and charged him with murder, prosecutors said.

"A brilliant businessman, passionate tennis player, and beloved family man, Thomas Gilbert, Sr. meant a great deal to all who knew him," Vance said in a statement.

"But in spite of all his love and generosity, this defendant shot his father at close range in his own apartment in an unconscionable and brutal crime."
