'Like A Ray Of Sunshine': Local Teen Is A Star Student

She has 'such a bright future ahead of her,' her family says. See why she was nominated as a Patch star student.

(Trudy Larkins)

Manhattan, New York — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Trudy Larkins who nominated Nina of Manhattan, New York.

How do you know the star local student?

Daughter

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

My daughter is a very hard worker. She managed to gain admissions and received a 4 year all tuition paid scholarship into the prestigious acting program at Fordham at Lincoln Center. The course work is quite rigorous and at times she struggles because she is a bit of perfectionist, but she is always able to remain positive, while being a motivator to others in her program. Last semester she was in London studying abroad, which is not easy to do. Not only must you have a certain level of academic excellence to be considered but you must also be able to handle the course work that involves an 8 hour day of commitment to learn and study all aspects of theatre/acting. Many students who attend Fordham come from families with substantial wealth and influence. At times I know my daughter feels that she doesn’t have the material luxuries and financial means that other students enjoy. However Nina doesn’t allow that to stop her from not only pursuing her dreams, but she is an example to others that it’s not about where you come from and what your family’s financial background is, but more about perseverance, hard work, and the drive to never give up. Nina has such a bright future ahead of her with her hopes to attend graduate school after graduating while pursuing acting/modeling jobs. I think my daughter would be a shining example of what is possible when you work hard and focus on your dreams. She is a go getter, and serves as an inspiration to everyone she meets.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Nina is like a ray of sunshine to everyone she meets. With her smile and charismatic personality she is one of those students on campus, that most know, students and faculty included. She is a positive force for everyone she meets and works with. You won’t forget her once you meet her.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Nina!
