Sixth Avenue Will Get a Bicycle Lane, Construction Begins Mid-July
Several intersections along Sixth Avenue have been deemed dangerous for cyclists.

A bike lane is coming to Sixth Avenue between West 9th and West 32nd streets, and construction begins mid-July, the Department of Transportation said Tuesday. The lane will be parking-protected with pedestrian safety islands and traffic signals for bicycles at West 14th and West 23rd streets.
Sixth Avenue between West 9th and West 23rd streets is dense and dangerous, and cyclists have been trying for years to get a safer bike lane there. The area sees 2,000 cyclists on average each weekday, according to the DOT. A whopping nine intersections along Sixth Avenue from 14th to 33rd streets are in the top 10 percent for crashes and injuries in Manhattan. Ten cyclists, 27 pedestrians and 15 drivers were severely injured in collisions along the corridor between 2009 and 2013, the DOT said.
