MIDTOWN, NY — Three firefighters and one civilian were injured on Tuesday morning after an electrical fire began in the basement along the tracks of the Long Island Rail Road at Grand Central Madison, leading to several travel disruptions.

According to officials, the FDNY first received a report of heavy smoke in the station at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday, close to the corner of Grand Central Place and Madison Avenue.

To get the smoke under control, 60 firefighters responded to the scene, FDNY officials said.

"Absolutely zero visibility down there, firefighters were met with heavy, heavy smoke and a significant amount of fire when they ultimately located the room where the fire was coming from," FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said.

At 10:16 a.m., a second alarm was transmitted, and more than 100 firefighters and EMS personnel are on the scene, the FDNY said.

As of 12 p.m., the fire was put out, FDNY authorities said.

On the LIRR, service to Grand Central has been suspended due to the FDNY activity and restarted at 4:41 p.m. Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the FDNY fire marshals, officials said.

Tucker said four people were treated at the scene by medics for non-life-threatening injuries.
