2 Killed In Suffolk Motorcycle Crashes

A motorcyclist ran a red light in one of the Memorial Day crashes, police say.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Two men were killed in motorcycle crashes in Suffolk County Monday, police said.

The first occurred in Yaphank just before 5 p.m. David Acevedo, 32, was riding a 2013 Suzuki motorcycle north on Sills Road when he went through a red light and struck a 2020 Mercedes-Benz SUV going west on Express Drive North.

Acevedo, of Hampton Bays, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes, 47-year-old Eva Konopka, of Brooklyn, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue with minor injuries.

The second crash happened at about 9:35 p.m. in Rocky Point.

A man was riding a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle south on Rocky Point Yaphank Road between Whiskey Road and Route 25A, when he lost control of the motorcycle, which left the roadway and struck a tree.

The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
