Woman Dies After SUV Slams Into Tree In Rocky Point: Police

She was taken via Rocky Point Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Suffolk police say.

ROCKY POINT, NY — A woman died after her SUV slammed into a tree in Rocky Point Tuesday night, Suffolk police said.

Ruth Ellerd was driving a 2017 Honda HRV southbound on Rocky Point-Yaphank Road, one-half mile
north of Whiskey Road, when it veered off the roadway and struck a tree just before 9 p.m., according to police.

Ellerd, 66, of Ridge, was taken via Rocky Point Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital where
she was pronounced dead, police said.

The Honda was impounded for a safety check, according to police.

Detectives from the 7th Squad in Shirley are investigating, police said.
