Health Advisory Issued against Swimming at 8 Local Beaches

If you've been anxiously waiting to hit the beach this summer, you might have to wait a bit longer.

Suffolk County Department of Health Services  issued an health advisory Monday warning residents against swimming at 67 beaches across the county, including 8 from the Miller Place-Rocky Point 

The county has a fear heavy rainfall will cause bacteria counts in excess of New York state standards to occur at these beaches. 

The advisory reads: "The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries, and, because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing. 

Officials advise swimmers that it's best to stay out of the water until at least 24 hours – meaning two successive tidal cycles – after the heavy rain stops. For more information, beachgoers can visit www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health or call 631-852-5822.

• Beech Road Beach
• Broadway Beach
