Winter Storm Warning Issued For LI: Town-By-Town Snow Estimates

BREAKING

LONG ISLAND, NY — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Long Island. It's in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday.

If you have plans for Saturday, they aren't happening. Snow will be falling at rate of 1-2 inches per hour for much of the day. Wind gusts as high as 50 mph will cause near-blizzard conditions.

At least a foot of snow is expected to accumulate in Suffolk County and Nassau County totals won't be far behind. There's about a 30 percent chance of more than 18 inches of snow across the island, according to weather service snow total maps.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency, the weather service says.

Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and power lines. PSEG Long Island says it's ready for the storm.

“We have performed system and logistic checks, and have additional personnel at the ready," said Michael Sullivan, vice president of transmission & distribution for PSEG." However the storm tracks, our crews will safely restore any outages as quickly as these wintry conditions allow.”

Some light snow is possible through the day Friday. About an inch could fall before midnight, but the brunt of the storm arrives early Saturday.
