Chaminade Senior Participates in National Grid Engineering Academy
Senior Thomas Macchio given hands-on engineering training.

Chaminade High School student Thomas Macchio recently participated in the Engineering Our Future program at National Grid which provides students with exposure to engineering through classroom instruction, hands-on activities, site visits, research, and projects.
The six-year program, which ran from July 15 to July 26, includes opportunities for paid internships, mentoring, job shadowing, networking opportunities and fast-track employment with National Grid.
The first week is an introduction to engineering academy for high school juniors and the second week is the future of engineering academy which is for returning students with more advanced classes in electricity and natural gas.

Students learn about the electric system and natural gas infrastructure. During the gas workshop students learn how to cut pipe and how to fuse it back together, using the same equipment that is used in the field by National Grid Gas operations.
Macchio a member of the Class of 2014, participated in National Grid’s Engineering Pipeline Academy where students are given hands-on engineering training and experience. Macchio learned how to join a Polyethylene gas pipe together using fusion force pressure on a McElroy 14 machine.
