Major Crimes Up 38% In Nassau Amid Rising Car Thefts, Burglaries: Cops

Data from the Nassau County Police Department shows vehicle thefts and robberies fueled an increase in major crime from 2021 to 2022.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY β€” Major crimes climbed 38 percent in Nassau County over the first 10 months of the year, compared to the same period last year, and the increase has largely been driven by a sharp rise in stolen vehicles, robberies and home break-ins.

That's according to crime statistics published on the Nassau County Police Department's website.

Major crimes have accounted for 5,542 of the 20,956 crimes in 2022. Including the over 15,000 non-major crimes, the 2022 overall crime rate is up 19.62 percent over 2021.

The biggest jump has come in stolen cars, up over 87 percent from 425 to 796 thefts. Vehicle thefts in the county have spiked in 2022, along with the theft of catalytic converters.

Home burglaries also rose this year, over 39 percent. The rate of robberies saw a jump of over 51 percent. Grand larceny was up 38 percent.

The spike in major crimes comes as the county has seen a drop in murder, rape and criminal sex acts.

There were six murders, seven rapes, two criminal sex acts over the first 10 months of 2022, down from seven, 17 and eight, respectively.
