Officer Rescues Elderly Woman Trapped In Mineola Fire

The officer was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. He was treated and released.

A police officer was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after he rescued a 97-year-old woman from an apartment blaze on Saturday evening in Mineola, police say.

According to authorities, police responded to a call for a building fire at 101 Lincoln Ave. and encountered thick black smoke on the third floor at 6:05 p.m. Residents were evacuating the building when police discovered that a 97-year-old woman was trapped in an apartment adjacent to the fire, police say. An officer was able to enter the apartment and assist the woman to safety.

Three residents suffered smoke inhalation; two were treated at the scene and another was taken to a nearby hospital by the Mineola Fire Department. The officer that rescued the elderly woman also suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a nearby hospital by a Nassau County Police Ambulance where he was treated and released.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire.
