• 'Torso killer' Richard Cottingham admits to another killing 60 years ago (newsday.com) — Mineola readers are tied to this case through victim Mary Beth Heinz, a 21-year-old from the village whom serial killer Richard Cottingham admitted killing decades ago. Authorities say Cottingham, already serving multiple life sentences, has now confessed to a 1965 New Jersey murder, while Nassau cases — including victims from Mineola and nearby communities — remain part of his long trail of admitted crimes.
   

• Pediatric Patients with Low-Risk AML Can Receive Fewer Cycles of Chemotherapy (hematologyadvisor.com) — A Mineola-based NYU Langone pediatric oncologist is helping show that some children with low‑risk acute myeloid leukemia can safely receive four instead of five chemotherapy cycles, sharply cutting exposure to harsh drugs. The large trial analysis found similar survival and relapse rates for the lowest‑risk group, while confirming that higher‑risk children still benefit from the full five‑cycle regimen.
