Winter Storm Warning Issued for Mineola

Let’s start with the good news: it will be sunny with highs near 40 on Saturday and Sunday.

The not so good news for those sick of the snow and cold (probably everyone on Long Island by this point): we are getting more of both before the weekend arrives.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Long Island–in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Rain will mix with sleet and snow Wednesday evening before changing to all snow Wednesday night. Snow may be heavy at times–up to an inch an hour–late Wednesday night through Thursday morning, the NWS says. The snow will taper off Thursday evening.

The NWS is currently predicting 6-8 inches of snow across most of the island. Areas along the North Shore in Nassau and western Suffolk may see 4-6 inches.

“Hazardous driving conditions are expected tonight and Thursday due to reduced visibilities, icy roads and significant snow accumulations,” the winter storm warning says.

The temperature will approach 40 during the day Wednesday, but the mercury will drop below freezing Wednesday night and remain there until the weekend, according to the NWS. The high on Thursday will be in the mid-20s before sinking into the single digits at night. Wind chill temperatures Thursday night will be between zero and 5 degrees. Friday will be sunny, but cold, with a high near 22.
