Pair Seriously Injured In Fiery Crash; Man Charged With DWI: PD
He struck a guardrail and a tree; the vehicle burst into flames after the pair escaped, police say.
MONTAUK, NY — A Mastic man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a fiery Montauk crash early Monday that left both him and his passenger seriously injured, police said.
According to East Hampton Town Police, the crash took place at 3:02 a.m. on Montauk Highway near Lincoln Avenue. Wilme Chan-Herrera, 26, of Mastic, was arrested and charged with DWI and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, police said.
Chan-Herrera was driving a 2019 GMC Terrain west when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail and a tree, police said. The vehicle became engulfed in flames after Chan-Herrera and the woman, 30, escaped, police said.

Both Chan-Herrera and the woman were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital with serious injuries, police said.
