NYC Daily: The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New York City.

(Patch Media)

Good morning! New York State is preparing to receive out-of-state abortion patients by investing millions in reproductive healthcare providers, while a new lawsuit is challenging the state's recently enacted gun laws, and monkeypox cases are double what they were a week ago, with vaccines still few and far between. Also, researchers are one step closer to transplanting pig organs into humans.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. New York City-area abortion providers will receive $10 million from the state to expand their services, Governor Kathy Hochul announced, in an effort to help make New York a national reproductive rights "safe harbor." That's on top of $15 million that will go to independent clinics. (New York City Patch)
  2. A lawsuit filed by a GOP Congressional candidate takes aim at parts of New York's newly enacted gun laws. The suit argues it's unconstitutional for business owners to prohibit customers with concealed weapons from entering their property, decrying it a "case-by-case public referendum." (U.S. News & World Report)
  3. NYC monkeypox cases have once again doubled since last week, now totaling over 200. At–risk New Yorkers, including many gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, scrambled to reserve one of 1,250 vaccination appointments on Tuesday, as the Health Department's website once again went down. (New York City Patch)
  4. Despite campaign promises made on Twitter, the number of closed playgrounds in NYCHA has increased significantly since Mayor Adams took office in January, leaving many families with children forced to walk great lengths to relax outside. (THE CITY)
  5. Lawmakers and advocates are urging Governor Hochul to hand over control of a massive development and infrastructure project to a new inter-governmental agency. The project involves rebuilding Penn Station and redeveloping several large blocks in its immediate vicinity. (Gothamist)
