🌱 10 NYC Nabes Hit Hardest By Heat + Future Of Horse-Drawn Carriages
NYC Daily: The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New York City.

Good morning New York City, and happy Friday! We've all been feeling the (literal) heat over the past few weeks, but a new report shows how the lack of public spaces to cool down takes a disproportionate toll on some NYC neighborhoods. There's also possibly more community spread of polio than previously thought, and a renewed push to ban horse-drawn carriages from Central Park.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

- The study, released by Comptroller Brad Lander, notes that approximately 370 people die from heat-related causes each year.

- Twenty three thousand monkeypox vaccine appointments were made available Thursday, amid concerns that due to supply chain issues there won't be enough capacity to keep up with demand. At least 150,000 New Yorkers are potentially at high risk. (New York City Patch)
- A new bill to ban horse-drawn carriages in Central Park is gaining increased support and criticism from all sides of the political spectrum. Under the proposal, the carriages would be replaced by slow-moving electric vehicles, with current drivers getting priority. (New York City Patch)
- NYC has dolled out $68 million so far this year to settle alleged police misconduct lawsuits, according to a Legal Aid Society report. That's more than the total amount spent in 2020, although the NYPD contends the data is "skewed by four cases." (New York Daily News)
