18-Year-Old Who Died In Police Custody Identified

NEW YORK CITY — An 18-year-old woman who died in police custody over the weekend has been identified, NYPD officials announced Monday.

The woman has been identified as Saniyah Cheatham, police said.

Cheatham was found unresponsive at the 41st Precinct in the Bronx around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, police said.

Multiple officers performed CPR while waiting for EMS to arrive to the scene. Cheatham was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, where she was pronounced dead.

The city's medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.

The reason behind the woman being in police custody has not been disclosed. According to a CBS News report, the 18-year-old and a friend were arrested on Saturday for allegedly fighting.
