Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. Two more cases of monkeypox have been identified in New York City, bringing the total to seven. The disease appears to be primarily sexually transmitted, with most cases being found in gay and bisexual men. (New York City Patch)
  2. In preparation to build a massive wind farm 14 miles off New York's Atlantic coast, government agencies are preparing to build two massive facilities in NYC that will serve as shipping and building hubs for wind turbines. The facilities will be located in a wooded coastal section of Staten Island and in southern Brooklyn. (Gothamist)
  3. LGBT groups and out politicians are upset that the right-wing Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis is set to speak at a conference at Chelsea Piers in the West Village on Sunday about “the Florida model and why it’s good for religious Americans.” DeSantis recently signed a controversial "Don't Say Gay" law. (Politics NY)
  4. Governor Kathy Hochul signed a series of gun-regulation bills into law on Monday at an event in The Bronx. They raise the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic weapons to 21, increase the state's red flag laws, and mandate micro-stamping technology on new weapons. (New York City Patch)
  5. Amid a heightened awareness nationally over gun violence, given recent mass-shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde and Tulsa, New York City has seen several threats:
    • In Forest Hills a teenager stands accused of threatening to shoot up his school "just like in Texas." That's what he wrote on his high school desk on May 26. (New York City Patch)
    • In Park Slope this week, a person — unidentified as of Monday — threatened to open fire at Millennium Brooklyn High School. (New York City Patch)
    • A law just passed the state legislature which would require schools to consider adding silent panic buttons to classrooms. (Patch)
