Good morning! Yesterday the Governor signed a new law that will make it easier to turn hotels into affordable housing. Only 29% of New Yorkers think Mayor Adams is doing a "good" job after five months in office, and Broadway is hoping for more help from the federal government. - A majority of New Yorkers support more NYPD officers in the subway system as a response to an uptick in crime, a new poll finds. New Yorkers also would like to see metal detectors. Seven in ten say they feel less safe now than before the pandemic began. (New York City Patch)
The same poll also found that only 29% of New Yorkers think Mayor Adams is doing a good job, while 64% think he's doing fair or poorly. His honeymoon period appears to be over. (New York City Patch)
2. Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law on Monday that will make it easier for New York City to convert underutilized hotels into affordable housing. The law, which is supported by the mayor, also unlocks $200 million in funding to assist in the transition. (New York City Patch)3. Performing arts advocates are calling on Congress to extend the Save Our Stages Act, which was passed in 2020 and provided a much-needed lifeline to Broadway during the pandemic through grant funding. Even now, two years later, ticket sales are still low with many shows struggling to say open. (AMNY)
4. Over 400 households in Queens went without water on Tuesday morning, after a massive water main break near NYCHA Queensbridge Houses the night before. The flooding left a "thick coating of mud" on nearby streets. (New York City Patch)
5. A Minnesota-based lender withdrew a lawsuit against taxi drivers that had accused them of “nonstop militant action unchecked by the rules that govern everyone else.” This comes after a massive protest and hunger strike last fall led to the lender restructuring its loan payment structure, which had left hundreds of drivers drowning in debt.
