3 Killed in Multi-Car Accident on Long Island Expressway in Queens

According to police, 3 people were killed and another eight injured after an early morning crash in Maspeth.

MASPETH, QUEENS — Three people are dead after an early morning accident on the Long Island Expressway in Queens.

The accident happened just after 4 a.m. when a speeding car crashed on the eastbound lane near Exit 18 at Maurice Avenue, authorities said. In addition to the three killed, eight other people were injured and taken to area hospitals, according to the FDNY. One of those is in critical condition. One person refused medical attention on the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation, the NYPD says the driver of a black Infiniti was speeding on the eastbound side of the LIE when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into barrier, splitting the car in half. The driver, Michael Fabre, 25, of Oakland Gardens, New York, was killed in the accident as well as two passengers, Giovanny Sanchez, 24, of Brentwood, New York, and Christina Formato, 24, Franklin Square, New York.

There were two other passengers in the car driven by Fabre. Both were transported to Elmhurst General Hospital, including one in critical condition and one in stable condition, police said.

The accident set off a chain reaction, where a dump truck collided with five other vehicles stopped ahead of the crash scene, police said. No one was seriously injured in the secondary crash.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
