Conceptual Rendering of Proposal #1 (Governor's Island Trust)

Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Marking the 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, NYC local politicians and Mayor Eric Adams broke ground on a resiliency project for the Two Bridges neighborhood of Lower Manhattan which includes movable flip-up walls. Adams estimates $8.5 billion in federal funding is needed to protect New York City's coastlines from future storm surges. (New York City Patch)
  2. See renderings of three competing proposals for building a climate change research center on Governor's Island that were unveiled this week. The winning proposal for a Climate Solutions Center will be selected next year, officials said. (New York City Patch)
  3. NYC health officials are investigating a possible outbreak of campylobacter, a bacterial infection that causes flu-like stomach symptoms, in parts of Brooklyn. So far 50 cases have been diagnosed, although there may be far more unreported. Most people recover from the infection in about a week without antibiotics. (THE CITY)
  4. The number of homeless students in New York City's public schools rose to 104,000 in the 2021-22 school year, despite an overall fall in enrollment, Advocates for Children of New York revealed in a study on Wednesday. That means that a school district made up of New York City's homeless students would be larger than 99.5 percent of districts nationwide, advocates say. (New York City Patch)
  5. The MTA plans to add bike racks at every subway station in the city and is set to open two of its seven toll bridges to bicycle traffic. There's currently "bike parking infrastructure" within 100 feet of 90 percent of stations, the agency said. (AMNY)
