8 NYC Bars Land on List of Best Bars in the World

The Dead Rabbit in the Financial District took top worldwide honors on the list.

NEW YORK, NY — The opportunities for drinking in New York City are rarely limited, so it's nice of Drinks International to recognize the city's propensity for boozing. The industry magazine came out with its annual list of the best bars in the world on Oct. 6 and eight New York City haunts made the list.

New York City even came in at No. 1 on the list thanks to The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog on Water Street in the Financial District. The Dead Rabbit took No. 2 on the list in both 2015 and 2014. The Artesian, in London, which took the top spot every year from 2012 to 2015 didn't even make the list in 2016.

Seven of the bars are located in Manhattan, with one across the East River in Williamsburg. New York doesn't get to claim tops among the number of bars, however, as London had nine spots make the list. London also had five of the top 10.

Employees Only, which finished seventh overall, was given a special "Legends of the List" award for having the best cumulative ranking over the eight years the rankings have existed. They showed up in person in London to collect the award last week and thanked the voters on Facebook.

The list is determined by 476 "bar experts," according to Drinks International, who rank the top-5 bars they've visited in the last 18 months. The voters cannot have a financial stake in any of the bars they voted for, and two of five must be based in a country other than where the voter lives.

There were 652 bars named by the experts, with the top 50 being determined by weighting each person's rankings.
