Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- A 20-year-old detainee, Emanuel Sullivan, was found dead in his cell on Rikers Island Saturday afternoon, making him the seventh person to die in the city's jails this year, and the third in May. Sullivan was facing murder charges for the home invasion killing of Tamer Shaarawy. (NBC New York)
- Approximately 8,000 honey bees swarmed at the base of a World Trade Center office tower Saturday night. They were removed by the NYPD's chief beekeeping squad. The bees were attempting to relocate their colony after outgrowing their previous home. It's hard to find housing in New York City–even for the insects. (New York City Patch)
- New York State could require the "microstamping" of gun bullets this week, more than 10 years after the idea was first introduced. The new technology would put a number on every bullet fired by a gun, identifying the machine it came from. It's one out of several gun-control bills in Albany right now, and has received pushback from the National Rifle Association and other lobbyist groups. (Gothamist)
- False reports of an active shooter at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn at around 1 a.m. on Sunday led to a frantic stampede, sending several people attending a boxing match to the hospital. Among those in attendance was tennis star Naomi Osaka. (The Hill)
- In response to recent mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, top NYC officials are considering locking the main entrances to schools, which up until have always remained open. Parents have conflicting views of the proposal. (Gothamist)
