Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- New York State is now in a state of emergency due to a polio outbreak, Governor Kathy Hochul declared on Friday after the disease was detected in the wastewater of five counties, including in New York City. The city's polio vaccination rate is 86.2 percent, but in some counties it's as low as 58.8 percent. (New York City Patch)
- A new COVID-19 vaccine booster specifically tailored to two of the most recent omicron variants is available–but the city's government isn't working hard to promote it. The shot is available at just seven city-run sites, in addition to eleven public hospitals and private pharmacies. (New York City Patch)
- New York City's municipal government hiring practices have come under scrutiny recently, amidst a high vacancy rate at city agencies. Government employees say they have been instructed to "lowball" candidates during the hiring practice, giving the lowest possible salary to prospective workers with the least amount of experience. (Gothamist)
- Former employees of the US Open say they are owed thousands of dollars in stolen wages. In one case, two women say they were laid off just a week after being hired and promised a $20 per-hour salary, without being payed. (Documented NY)
- Just 16 percent of New Yorkers considered eligible for supportive housing–which pairs subsidized affordable housing with social services–ended up in an apartment last year, data shows. Hundreds of applicants, potentially dealing with substance or mental health issues, were turned down because the services they needed were more than the program could afford. (City Limits)
