9/11 Memorials And Events Across New York City

New Yorkers can pay their respects at Sept. 11 ceremonies throughout the city.

NEW YORK CITY — On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 souls were lost during the devastating terrorist attacks. The city is still recovering from that tragic day seventeen years later.

New Yorkers will mourn those who perished come Tuesday with ceremonies across the city. Here are some of places and events where locals can gather to reflect, pray and remember those who died that day:

Reading of the names at the World Trade Center

The annual commemoration will read the names of victims beginning at 8:46 a.m. — when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center. The event is only open to victim's family members and love ones, but will be televised. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum will also live-stream the event, which ends around noon.

Victims will be mourned through prayer and reflections at the 209 Broadway church starting at 8 a.m. Come 8:46 a.m. the Rev. Dr. William Lupfer will ring the Bell of Hope in the traditional firefighters’ salute to the fallen. Later in the day, at 3 p.m., the church will hold a service with the Choir of Trinity Wall Street to read the names of the first responders who died.

Way of Light moment at the Oculus

New Yorkers will gather at the Oculus for the brief but poignant "Way of Light" moment at the transportation hub. Every Sept. 11 at exactly 10:28 a.m. — when the north tower collapsed — sunlight shines through the building's skylight. The beam of light travels through the main hall until the entire hub is drenched in natural light. It is meant to symbolize the light that continues to shine through after the darkness of the tragedy.

Tribute Park 9/11 Ceremony in Rockaway
Rockaway residents will gather at Tribute Park, where many locals watched the terrorist attacks unfold, at 8:30 a.m. to read the names of 70 Rockaway residents who perished on Sept. 11. The park features a gazebo with a stained-glass dome that has the names of locals and 242 firefighters who died etched into the glass. Tribute Park is located off of Beach Channel Drive at Beach 116th Street.

Bay Side Hills Civic Association 9/11 Ceremony

Northeast Queens residents will flock to the Bayside Hills Civic Association's annual 9/11 ceremony at 7 p.m. Participants are asked to bring candles for event, which will include speakers from local churches and the neighborhood's 111th NYPD precinct. The memorial will take place at the group's garden on the north side of the Horace Harding Expressway at Bell Boulevard.

Glendale 9/11 Memorial Garden ceremony

Locals will gather for a candlelight vigil at the 9/11 Memorial Garden in Forest Park to honor the 42 residents of Glendale, Middle Village, Ridgewood and Woodhaven who were killed on Sept. 11. The garden is located nearest to the park's Myrtle Avenue and 80th Street entrance near the Dry Harbor Playground.

Brooklyn Heights Film Screaming and Panel Discussion at the Brooklyn Historical Society

The Brooklyn Historical Society will screen an art video that inadvertently captured the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Wolfgang Staehle's film, titled "2001," will be shown continuously throughout the day and will culminate with "Transformed Overnight: The Impact of 9/11," a 7 p.m. panel discussion at the Historical Society's 128 Pierrepont Street building that will examine how the attacks have changed the city and the world. American Veterans Memorial Pier tribute in Bay Ridge

The 7 p.m. event at the American Veterans Memorial Pier in Bay Ridge will feature a moment of silence, a candle-lighting ceremony and a 21-gun salute. The pier, off of Shore Road and Bay Ridge Avenue, features a bronze sculpture dedicated to Sept. 11 in the shape of a speaking trumpet — a tool firefighters once used to warn people about fires.

Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance ceremony in Coney Island

An FDNY chaplain, joined by six firefighters from France, will officiate a candle-lighting ceremony at the wall. The memorial is actually made up of three granite walls at MCU Park, on Surf Avenue near West 16th Street, and includes the laser-engraved images of the fallen first responders, including a K-9 rescue dog named Sirius.

Blood Drives To Commemorate 9/11

The New York Blood Center will host 95 blood drives across the city from Sept. 9-14 to honor the victims of the attacks. The blood drives will help the center prepare for future emergencies and ensure hospitals and patients have access to the blood they need. Visit the center's list of blood drives here.

Tribute in Light

Twin beams will shoot 4 miles into the sky from dawn to dusk mirroring the Twin Towers Tuesday. The installation of 88 searchlights can be seen from a 60-mile radius.
