Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Throughout the 1990s, when murder rates were soaring in NYC, a detective, Louis Scarcella, used unconventional methods to extract confessions — which led to a large number of convictions. - New York State reported its first monkeypox case in a person under the age of 18 with no additional details given. The case comes as the state continues to lead the nation with a total of 2,798 cases as of August 19 and amid concerns that the virus could spread in schools once classes begin next month. (Gothamist)
- A fire in the Charleston neighborhood of Staten Island on Saturday night destroyed three houses, leaving fifteen people displaced. It took a total of 150 firefighters to put it out. (NBC New York)
- On Broadway, a 2003 play "Take Me Out" is getting a reprise starting in late October. The play explores what would happen if a prominent player, like Dereck Jeter, were to come out as gay. And "King James," which takes its name from LeBron James, is coming off Broadway. (AMNY)
