Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Mayor Eric Adams yesterday unveiled "Get Stuff Clean," a $14.5 million initiative to sweep New York City's streets clean in more than 1,000 neglected areas. The effort will consolidate citywide cleaning functions across different departments from sanitation to transportation to parks, with more than 200 new sanitation workers, officials said. - Meat or cheese from at least one New York City deli has been linked to a multi-state outbreak of listeria, which has so far sickened 16 people and killed one, including seven people in the city, according to the CDC. (New York City Patch)
- The Adams administration plans to close 'tent city,' the massive complex on Randall's Island built to house asylum seekers arriving in New York, less than a month after opened in October. Instead, residents of the facility, which has a capacity of up to 1,000, will be transferred to 600 rooms in the Watson Hotel in Midtown. (City Limits)
- The Department of Transportation is considering making Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn car-free, amid concerns from local elected officials that the major intersection is dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. The DOT is hoping to tap into $990 million for street improvements that Mayor Adams pledged to last April. (Gothamist)
- In a crackdown on 'cyberthieves,' the Manhattan District Attorney's office has frozen more than $1.3 million in cryptocurrency. Three New Yorkers were targeted by cryptocurrency scammers between November last year and April this year, according to DA Alvin Bragg, who said in a statement, "While many of these cyberthieves are overseas and currently out of our reach, the cryptocurrency they stole is not."
