Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Speaker Adrianne Adams of the NYC City Council and Mayor Eric Adams' press secretary are in dispute over the Department of Education's budget process. The Mayor's office said that the Council signed off on it and shouldn't go back on its vote, while Adams said the Council is considering "a full range of legal actions" to restore budget cuts. (New York City Patch)
  2. Mayor Adams greeted migrants arriving at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Sunday morning from Texas, to welcome them to the city. City officials believe that thousands — rather than dozens — of migrants have come from Texas in the past several weeks. (Gothamist)
  3. A Queens man was arrested at a Rockaway beach over the weekend for swimming after-hours when there was no lifeguard present. He believes excessive force was used against him. Two young people died from drowning in June in a part of the Rockaways that was closed off. (Gothamist)
  4. Today is the last day to request an absentee ballot for the August 23 Congressional and State Senate primaries. Early voting starts on August 13. Absentee ballots are expected to play a significant role in the elections given probable low voter turnout. (NBC New York)
  5. The Centers for Disease Control is sending a team to Upstate New York to investigate the first reported polio case in the US in ten years. Polio has been identified in at least seven wastewater samples in Rockland and Orange Counties, both of which have low vaccination rates. (Spectrum News 1)

  • The 48th annual Harlem Week is set to kick off on August 12th with a full 10-day schedule of events centered around the theme of “Inspiration, Impact, and Legacy.” (AMNY)
  • It's a happy ending! A popular bodega cat, Boka, that was stolen recently from a Park Slope deli, was returned over the weekend by a "mysterious intermediary." (NY Post)
  • The family of a man who died in March while being detained at a Rikers Island jail is suing New York City for $20 million. (NY Post)
  • The New York Times is wondering whether a neighborhood can be "instagrammed to death?" In other words, they've found that the popularity of social media-friendly spots for photo shoots–like a famous intersection in DUMBO–can have a negative impact on local residents. (New York Times)
