Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Levels of arsenic "higher than the federal standard" were detected in the drinking water of Jacob Riis Houses in the East Village, a NYCHA public housing development. NYCHA and NYC officials announced the discovery on Friday night, but top NYCHA managers appear to have known about preliminary results two weeks ago. Over the weekend, a federal monitor overseeing the housing authority requested that the agency keep a paper trail of all documentation relating to the arsenic discovery. (THE CITY)
- Former President Donald Trump was set to appear at a fundraiser in New Jersey for New York GOP nominee for Governor Lee Zeldin on Sunday. Trump had previously stayed out of backing a candidate in the Republican primaries. In mid-July Governor Kathy Hochul had raised $11.7 million, compared to Zeldin's $1.6 million. (Gothamist)
- An E. coli outbreak that began in the Midwest has now been reported in Kentucky and New York State, according to the Centers For Disease Control. Eight out of ten people infected had recently eaten at Wendy's, however a source has not been officially identified. (NBC News)
- NYC principles are upset after the president of the New York City Principal's Union fired a top-ranking executive, which they say was done without due process. Sana Nasser, who was in charge of direct support to members, said she was fired after asking to add more staff – a claim which the union leadership denies. (New York Daily News)
- Twenty-seven Greek, Italian and Egyptian artifacts were seized by investigators from the Metropolitan Museum of Art last week, as part of an ongoing crackdown on networks used to traffic antiquities. The artifacts will soon be returned to their countries of origin. They have a collective value of over $13 million. (The New York Times)
