Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- NYC will house asylum seekers arriving from Texas under tents in two massive "Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief" centers. One of the sites will be at Orchard Beach in The Bronx, with the other still to be determined. Asylum seekers are supposed to spend just 1 to 3 nights there, although times could vary. (New York City Patch)
- New York's unemployment rate rose to 6.6 percent in August, with a total of 108,000 people unemployed that were employed before the pandemic. During the same period, the state has seen an influx of job hunters, according to the Center For New York City Affairs. (New York City Patch)
- The commission tasked with redrawing the New York City Council's district boundaries voted to reject the most recent map they created, potentially significantly dragging out the redistricting process. The commission is supposed to finish its work by Dec. 7. (Gothamist)
- It looks like Mayor Eric Adams' administration could abandon a planned expansion of the previous administration's free pre-k-for-all program to include 3-K. The funding for the program was allocated in more than $7 billion of stimulus funding, but as the city faces a $10 billion shortfall after the pandemic-era funds run out, it's unclear how it would be paid for. (Chalkbeat New York)
- Brooklyn politicians rallied to support congestion pricing, the plan to toll drivers entering and exiting Manhattan below 60th street, on the day before the MTA's comment period ends. Some of the elected officials added that there should be exemptions for for-hire vehicle drivers, including taxis, Lyft and Uber. (AMNY)
