Baby Cow Wrangled On Major Deegan Expressway: NYPD

The cow wandered onto the highway late Tuesday morning, police said.

THE BRONX, NY — Call it udder chaos. Cops had to play cowboy when a baby cow wandered onto a highway in The Bronx Tuesday morning, the NYPD said.

The bold bovine was spotted near exit 4 on the Major Deegan Expressway and reported to cops just before 11:30 a.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

It didn't take long for police to wrangle the cow — it was "in custody" by about noon, the spokeswoman said. Cops blocked it in and were able to get control of it without using tranquilizers, an NYPD spokesman said.

But the brown beast didn't go out without a fight — it briefly got back up on all fours only for cops to knock it down again, video from the Citizen app showed.

Police brought the calf to Animal Care Centers of NYC, which said he was named "Major Deegan." Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in New Jersey will take him in "(a)fter a short romp in the hay," the rescue organization said.

An NYPD spokesman said the major was "refusing to talk and he’s uncooperative." But he appeared somewhat content being off the asphalt in a video Skylands posted to Facebook.

It's unclear where the cow came from or how it got onto the busy highway. It made its daring romp less than a mile from the Bronx Terminal Market and about a mile and a half from Yankee Stadium.
