Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. A Hasidic school in Brooklyn agreed to pay $8 million in fines and restitution in an admission of guilt for stealing millions from government programs, including one intended for needy children, federal prosecutors announced on Monday. (New York City Patch)
  2. The Legal Aid Society is calling on the city to save the mansion headquarters of a historic secret society, the United Order of Tents, in Bed-Stuy, whose history dates back to the Underground Railroad. The society, which provides mutual aid to the neighborhood, should be made exempt from property taxes, the Legal Aid Society said. (New York City Patch)
  3. The MTA will open public restrooms at eight subway stations starting in January, the agency announced, including 14th Street-Union Square, Yankees Stadium, and Flushing-Main Street. The city has a total of 133 bathrooms across 69 stations which have been shuttered since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. (NYC Streetsblog)
  4. Very few New Yorkers have gotten an updated bivalent COVID-19 booster shot, despite the new vaccine being available for the two months. City officials say the number is close to half a million, but the city and state has not updated health portals, it only list about 12,000. Health experts say that follows a larger trend of COVID-19 taking a backseat in most New Yorker's minds. (Gothamist)
  5. The NYPD's most complained about cop, who has garnered 56 substantiated allegations of misconduct, spoke out in a recent podcast appearance defending what he describes as proactive policing in high-crime areas of the city. (THE CITY)
