Board Of Elections Expands NYC Early Voting Sites

NEW YORK — New York City's Board of Elections now plans to hold early voting at 57 sites this fall, according to a list released Thursday — a number still far short of what city officials have demanded.

The updated list now includes 18 sites in Brooklyn, 14 in Queens, 11 in The Bronx and seven each in Manhattan and Staten Island. The Board of Elections initially proposed just 38 polling locations, a number that Mayor Bill de Blasio and others have called inefficient.

The new list includes double the number of poll sites in Queens. The city's second-most populous borough would have had only seven early-voting locations under the previous plan.

"I am glad more voters will have the chance to vote early now that additional poll sites have been added," said state Sen. Michael Gianaris, a Queens Democrat, whose office released the new list. "While we need even more going forward, doubling the initial proposal is a step in the right direction."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law in January establishing a nine-day period for New Yorkers to cast ballots before Election Day. The first early-voting period is slated to start Oct. 26 ahead of this year's Nov. 5 general election, according to the BOE's website.

Michael Ryan, the board's executive director, has argued that the city should ramp up early voting gradually to avoid causing chaos when voters try it out for the first time.

But the de Blasio administration has called for at least 100 polling places and offered the board $75 million to set them up. Earlier this week, the mayor repeated his stance that at least 100 sites is the only "acceptable" number.

"If they do not do that, we will consider all options possible to make them create an early voting program that actually works for everyday New Yorkers, and we’ll certainly consider legal action among those potential steps," de Blasio, a Democrat, said Tuesday at an unrelated news conference.
