NEW YORK — With roughly 425,000 dogs and more dog parks than any other big city, New York City is practically the nation's canine capital. But New Yorkers love some pups more than others, a new ranking shows.

The Labrador retriever is the city's most popular dog breed, according to the list from PuppySpot, a website that helps breeders place their dogs with owners. That suggests Gotham has a good nose for trends, as the Labrador was the nation's most popular pup for the 28th straight year in 2018, according to the American Kennel Club.

The goldendoodle and the German shepherd aren't far behind at No. 2 and No. 3 on the city's list, respectively. The three breeds could be popular because they're among the best dogs for families, according to PuppySpot.

The ranking marks a shift from last year, when the American Kennel Club identified the French bulldog as the top Big Apple breed for 2017. The dainty dogs ranked ninth on PuppySpot's list and No. 4 on the kennel club's nationwide ranking of the most popular breeds for 2018.

Here are the top dogs in New York City, according to PuppySpot.
