NEW YORK — A Bronx police officer became the eighth member of the NYPD to die by suicide early Tuesday morning, news reports say. The 35-year-old cop died of self-inflicted wounds in Yonkers around 3 a.m., the New York Post reported

The officer, a seven-year veteran of the Police Department who was temporarily working near Yankee Stadium, was off-duty and left behind a note, according to the Post and CNN.

An NYPD spokesperson told Patch that he did not have any information about the cop's death.

Eight police officers have taken their own lives in the city so far this year. Two of the deaths have come since NYPD brass announced plans to launch a peer counseling program as part of an effort to improve cops' access to mental-health resources.

Six of the suicides have occurred just since early June, when Deputy Chief Steven Silks died in Queens. The last death came on July 27, when an off-duty sergeant took his own life on Staten Island, according to CBS2.
