Bronx Junkyard Fire Injures 1 As Tires Blaze: FDNY

NEW YORK — A fire in a Bronx junkyard seriously injured one person and sent pillars of dark smoke into the sky Wednesday afternoon, according to witnesses and fire officials.

The blaze started at about 3:10 p.m. and spread across the junkyard on Boston Road near Pinkney Avenue in the Eastchester neighborhood, an FDNY spokesperson said. Firefighters were still battling the three-alarm fire more than two hours later, the FDNY said.

More than 100 firefighters fought to quell burning tires and car parts following reports of explosions on the site, according to the Fire Department. Medics rushed one person to Jacobi Hospital with possibly life-threatening injuries, the FDNY spokesperson said.

Flames could be seen from nearby Co-Op City as black smoke billowed out of the junkyard, photos from a witness at the apartment complex show. Video from near the scene shows a tower of smoke drifting across the sky.

The fire occurred at the address of New England Used Auto Parts. The business could not be immediately reached by phone Wednesday afternoon.
