- Frank James, the man accused of a mass-shooting in the Subway in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, is being held without bail until he faces trial. Some authorities have reported that James may have turned himself in by calling a crime stopper hotline. Experts say the incident on Tuesday fits an alarming trend in the United States of lone shooters. (New York City Patch)
- More than 1,200 New Yorkers died of drug overdoses in the first six months of 2021, making it one of the most deadly periods on record. An increase in deaths comes at the same time the city is ramping up efforts to counter the drug epidemic, including opening an overdose clinic in East Harlem as a harm reduction measure. - New York City Schools are not just keeping their Gifted & Talented programs, they're being expanded to every school district, adding over 1,000 new seats, Mayor Adams announced. Foregoing a test, kindergarten students vying to qualify for the program will now be recommended by their teacher. (New York City Patch)
- April 18 is the federal deadline to file your taxes. Good news for New Yorkers, the city has the third-largest average tax refunds in the nation at $4,444. Additionally, future years will see an accelerated income tax break for middle-class New Yorkers, according to a deal struck in the state's budget negotiations. (New York City Patch)
- A person was apprehended on Thursday after attempting to enter P.S. 69 in The Bronx, in attempt to assault a staff member he reportedly had a domestic dispute with. A safety guard who prevented it from taking place was slashed and taken to the hospital. (New York City Patch)
