Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Chipotle will pay $2o million to its New York City workers in a settlement following a years-long probe. The fast food company is accused of not providing notice to workers of their weekly schedule and depriving them of sick leave. The settlement is the largest of its kind in the country. (New York City Patch) A Dunkin' Doughnuts in Staten Island will also pay $260,000 in fines and retribution for depriving its workers of paid sick leave and sufficient notice of their schedule. 2. A New York Appeals Court on Tuesday reversed a judge's previous ruling, temporarily reinstating up to $365 million in budget cuts to the Department of Education, at least until a hearing to be held at the end of August. (Gothamist)
  3. The last remaining Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Harlem was evicted after a three-year-long legal battle with the city, which ultimately sold the building to a nonprofit so that it could be turned into affordable housing. The church is relocating to the South Bronx. (New York City Patch)
  4. Tenants of an apartment building on the Upper West Side are protesting their landlord over construction work that has made their homes "unlivable," due to "high volume, ear-piercing, constant noise for hours a day," as well as "dust and toxic fumes." (New York City Patch)
  5. For asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants, many of whom have arrived in New York City in recent days and months, IDNYC, a form of identification that doesn't require an immigration status, is proving a life-line for accessing government services — evidenced by the high number of signups this year.
