Daily News To Follow Massive Layoffs With Price Hike: Report

The storied tabloid will reportedly soon cost $1.50 on newsstands.

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Daily News is set to get more expensive now that its newsroom staff has been gutted, a new report says. Tronc, the storied tabloid's parent company, plans to raise the price of a daily paper to $1.50 from $1 starting Aug. 6, the New York Post reported Thursday.

The Sunday paper's price will also increase by 50 cents to $2, the story says.

The planned price hike was revealed just days after tronc slashed the News' editorial staff by about 50 percent in a major restructuring. The Chicago-based media conglomerate acquired the paper for $1 in September from longtime owner Mort Zuckerman.

The News had just cut the price of its print edition to $1 two years ago after raising it to $1.25 in 2014. The paper had a paid daily circulation of just about 164,000 in the first quarter, according to the Post.

A tronc spokeswoman declined to comment Friday morning.
