NEW YORK — Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to announce his 2020 presidential campaign this week, according to a new report. De Blasio could jump into the race as soon as Wednesday, which is his 58th birthday, the New York Daily News reported Friday, citing sources "with knowledge of the plans."

The news comes a day after de Blasio said he would decide whether to enter the crowded Democratic field this month.

His decision will end months of speculation about whether the second-term mayor would make a run at the White House. De Blasio acknowledged on Thursday that his political action committee has been conducting polling in Iowa, which he has visited in recent months along with other early primary states.

If he does indeed run, de Blasio would be a serious underdog among more than 20 Democrats vying to unseat Republican President Donald Trump in 2020. One top contender is U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who appeared at de Blasio's second mayoral inauguration.

The last New York City mayor to win a higher office was was John T. Hoffman, who was elected governor in 1868.
