Driver Charged After Woman Killed, 1 Critically Injured In NYC Hit-And-Run Crash

The incident happened at East 40th Street and Fifth Avenue near Bryant Park.

NEW YORK CITY — A minivan driver has been charged after he fatally struck a woman and critically injured her husband as they crossed the street in Midtown on Wednesday, police said Thursday.

Mohammed Abouzaid, 40, of the Bronx, has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing death and failure to yield to a pedestrian or cyclist.

The incident happened at East 40th Street and Fifth Avenue near Bryant Park around 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to police, a 50-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man were crossing the street when a blue Toyota Minivan hit them.

The couple were tourists from Germany, according to multiple reports.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The 55-year-old was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition with a skull fracture.

Abouzaid was taken into custody at West 38th Street and 8th Avenue.

The identity of the woman has not been released yet.

An investigation remains ongoing.
