Off-Duty NYPD Officer Found Dead From Apparent Suicide

NEW YORK CITY — An off-duty police officer was found dead of an apparent suicide Tuesday, police said.

The NYPD officer was identified on social media as Gregory J. Purvis of the 30th Precinct.

The officer's body was found inside West 186th St. in Hudson Heights around 1:44 p.m after his partner hadn't heard from him and became worried, according to a New York Post report.

Officers found Purvis with a gunshot wound to the head.

The Bronx chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association in an Instagram post wrote:

"We extended our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of PO Gregory J. Purvis from the 30th Precinct, who tragically took his own life on 08/20/2024.”

“Mental health struggles are real, and it’s important that we support one another during these difficult times,” the post said. “If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out—there is always help available.”
