NEW YORK CITY — New e-bike charging stations are coming to NYCHA buildings after a wave of deadly fires sparked by faulty set-ups and bootleg batteries, officials said.

A $25 million federal grant will pay for 173 electric mobility and storage stations, said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who helped arrange the funding.

Schumer stood alongside his colleague Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Mayor Eric Adams to announce the grant Sunday.

"The fed-funded NYCHA project is going to reduce and even eliminate potential fire hazards linked to the batteries," Schumer said.

The grant followed a fatal fire in Chinatown that killed four people and FDNY officials pinned on faulty-e-bike batteries.

Five people have died in 63 fires caused by those batteries this year, officials said.

Safe outdoor e-bike charging set-ups will come to 53 NYCHA developments in all five boroughs, Schumer said.
