Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. It's Election Day, New York City! Over 430,000 New Yorkers across the street had voted early through Sunday, in what's expected to be a close race for Governor between Democrat Kathy Hochul and Republican Lee Zeldin. Close to 100,000 voters headed to the polls on Sunday alone, while Hochul campaigned with high-profile national figures including Bill Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris. (New York City Patch)
  2. New York City is seeing nearly 2,500 COVID-19 cases per day on average–the highest it's been since August, data shows, hinting the city is likely to see a cold-weather holiday surge, as has been the case in the past two years. (New York City Patch)
  3. NYC public school enrollment has fallen nearly 11 percent since the 2018-19 school year to 903,000, according to data released this week. In a statement on Monday, Mayor Eric Adams and Chancellor David Banks announced that schools won't lose money if their enrollment dipped, saying the city will use $200 million in federal stimulus funds to boost funding and cover any losses. (New York City Patch)
  4. The owners of a Texas-based company hired by New York City to provide wrap-around services to recently arrived migrants, including on the Randall's Island 'tent city,' have been generous supporters of both Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, campaign records show. (Gothamist)
  5. Environmental advocacy groups say that Mayor Eric Adams' administration's climate adaptation plan, released in October, doesn't go nearly far enough in addressing the threats of climate change. A local law passed last year required the publication of a comprehensive plan that's updated every decade. (THE CITY)
