NEW YORK CITY – Every New Yorker will be mailed a postage-paid application for an absentee ballot so they can vote in the June 23 election without physically going to the polls.

Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement Friday. He said polls would also be open for those who wanted to vote in person.

The election involves some congressional seats, as well state senate seats and borough presidents, along with the Democratic presidential primary.

"Anyone could have done this before, but we're making it more convenient, sending it directly with postage paid."

Cuomo made the announcement after saying that projections show a move away from social distancing protocols now could cause a spike in coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths in July that would be higher than anything the state has seen so far.

He said numbers over the last few days shows New York is on the downward side of the curve for the amount of people contracting the disease.

"If we say we are done, we can't stay in the house anymore, let's reopen, what happens? That's what happens," he said.

"It increases to a higher point than we had increased the first time. July would be higher than ever."

New York's stay at home order is in place until May 15. Cuomo said he expects to make an announcement next week on if that will be extended.
