Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. Laura Kavanagh will be the first woman commissioner of the New York City Fire Department in its 157-year history, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Thursday. (New York City Patch)
  2. Fewer than 10 percent of tenants facing eviction cases had attorneys last month, despite the majority (more than 80 percent) of them being entitled to free legal counsel under a bill passes last year. Meanwhile, a city report found that most tenants that received free legal services "were able to remain in their homes." (THE CITY)
  3. The City Council passed a set of bills dubbed the 'rat pack' on Thursday that are aimed at solving NYC's rat problem by expanding the use of rat special zones, requiring rat-proof containers in certain locations, and requiring that construction sites develop rodent mitigation plans. The bills were also met by costumed rat protestors. (New York City Patch)
  4. A last-minute change to the Gowanus neighborhood rezoning in Brooklyn passed by the City Council will now cap the height of new residential development at five stories instead of nine limiting the ability in some instances to use Mandatory-Inclusionary Housing (MIH), to the applause of local advocates and neighbors but to the dismay of other housing advocates. (THE CITY)
  5. Health officials are now concerned about a possible "triple threat" on top of the COVID-19 and flu "twindemic" this fall with a rise in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases throughout New York City in the past several weeks. The virus causes flu-like symptoms and is particularly dangerous for infants and older adults. (Spectrum News NY1)
