Fire Burns Behind Citi Field Prior to Game: FDNY

The Mets were set to play the Phillies at 7 p.m., and plenty were tweeting about the black smoke.

FLUSHING, NY — A junkyard fire behind Citi Field garnered plenty of attention before the game with the Phillies on Friday evening.

According to an FDNY official, they reported to a fire near 126th Street and 37th Avenue at 4:56 p.m. A fire in a junkyard spread to a vacant steel garage, but the FDNY had it under control just before 6 p.m.

The Mets played the rival Phillies at 7 p.m. and plenty of people were waiting to go into the ballpark and tweeting about the fire. Thick, black smoke could be seen wafting over the Citi Field parking lots.
