Flash Flood Warning Issued For Part Of NYC

Thunderstorms could bring heavy rain and flash flooding to parts of NYC and New Jersey, the National Weather Service warns.

NEW YORK — Forecasters issued a flash flood warning for part of New York City as thunderstorms threatened the metropolitan area Thursday evening. Rain falling as fast as 2 inches an hour could strike Staten Island and parts of New Jersey, the National Weather Service says.

Staten Island will be under the flash flood warning until 8:15 p.m. along with Hudson, Union and southern Essex counties in New Jersey, the weather service says.

The weather shouldn't be as nasty elsewhere in the five boroughs. A chance of showers could bring a fraction of an inch of rain to Central Park by early Friday morning, according to the weather service.

The rains are expected to strike a day after thunderstorms battered the city, badly flooding one Queens subway station and knocking out power for hundreds of customers in Astoria.

The latest storms come ahead of a weekend heat wave that could bring the Big Apple's first 100-degree day in seven years.
