Henry Hudson Bridge Upper Level Open During Triathlon, Duathlon: MTA

A heat advisory was also issued for the Sunday morning events, according to race organizer Life Time.

NEW YORK CITY — The upper level of the Henry Hudson Bridge will remain open Sunday morning throughout the 20th Verizon New York City Triathlon and first-ever Duathlon, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The bridge will be accessible to the Bronx via northbound traffic by the Dyckman Street entrance only through Riverside Drive between 4 to 10 a.m. to accommodate the cycling portion of the event, MTA officials said.

The NYPD will close the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway from West 56th Street to West 181st Street beginning at 4 a.m. and access will remain closed through 10 a.m. for this event. All southbound bridge lanes to Manhattan will remain open throughout the event, according to the transportation agency.

Motorists should use an alternate route during this period and expect delays, the agency said.

Due to high temperatures, a heat advisory has also been issued for the triathlon; therefore, the running and biking portions of the triathlon and the duathlon portion of the race have been shortened, according to Life Time, which owns and produces the triathlon.

The triathlon bike section will be reduced from 24.8 miles to 12.4 miles and the run will be reduced from 6.2 miles to 2.5 miles. Leg 1 of the duathlon run will be reduced from 2 miles to 1 mile and Leg 2 will be reduced from 6.2 miles to 2.5 miles, according to the Life Time.

“While it is disappointing to reduce the length of both races, our number one priority is to do all we can to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our competitors, volunteers, medical personnel and spectators,” Life Time said on its website.

The change in the Leg 1 Run of the duathlon course will now include a south turnaround at roughly 90th Street and the West Side Highway.

On the bike course, the north turnaround will now be at 181st Street and the West Side Highway.
The change in the run course for the triathlon and the Leg 2 Run of the duathlon will take place in Central Park, where, instead of continuing South to the lower Central Park loop and north on the East Drive to the turnaround point at East 90 Street, competitors will instead head east on the 72nd Street transverse towards the finish line at Center Drive.

“We STRONGLY encourage all of our athletes to maintain hydration before, during and after respective races,” Life Time said. Race officials will also take measures to ensure participants stay hydrated.

To assist athletes’ safety on race day, race officials are providing the following:

Athletes have until 9 p.m. Saturday for a bike check-in at the Transition at the Riverside Park Soccer Fields at 101st Street and to receive their expo packet.
