Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer wants New Yorkers to make their voices heard in the face of shrinking commercial airplane seats. The space between seats has shrunk from 35 inches to 31 over the past several years. Right now through Nov. 1 the Federal Aviation Administration is taking public comments on regulations for minimum seat dimensions. (Gothamist)
- For more than a decade the MTA has been misleading the public about the cost and timeline of its massive East Side Access project that will soon connect the Long Island Railroad with Grand Central, a New York Daily News investigation has found. The project, now estimated to be $11.6 billion, was initially given a price tag of just $2.8 billion in 1997. (Subscription/New York Daily News)
- Residents and elected officials including–Mayor Eric Adams–marched from Washington Heights in Manhattan to Highbride in The Bronx to call for an end to gun violence on Sunday. The march took place just hours after a police-involved shooting in Inwood when a 29-year-old gunman reportedly refused to drop his weapon and was shot upon. (AMNY)
- The New York Post reports that two close allies of Mayor Eric Adams–one a Council Member's wife and the other a Bronx Democratic Party leader–have been promoted to top roles in the city's Parks Department with high-paying salaries. (New York Post )
- A recent report from the Centers For Disease Control found high levels of flu activity in New York City, but low levels in New York State overall, potentially signaling an early start to flu season. The CDC recommends everyone over 6 months old get vaccinated by the end of October. (SILive.com)
